What it counts

You know how to build a deck. The counting is the tedious part, so the tool does it: decking, joists, rim joist, ledger, beam, posts, post bases, footing concrete, joist hangers and fasteners. Add stairs or railing and it counts stringers, treads, railing kits and balusters too. (Hanger nails are the line people forget. Here they're on the list.)

You set the waste factor, and the list shows each count before and after it. A bare count looks tidy on paper and runs short on the job, and a short order means an extra trip to the yard.

The cost estimate comes from a price book you edit. It starts with estimates from public US retail listings, and a line with no sourced price stays empty for you to fill in. Enter what your yard charges and the estimate runs on your prices.

It's built for contractors working up a bid and serious DIYers buying for their own deck. It takes a rectangular deck, ledger-attached or freestanding. Stairs and railing are optional: one straight stair run, and railing on three sides or all four.

How it works

  1. Enter your deck

Type in length along the house, width out from it and height. Pick joists, decking and posts. Add stairs and railing if the deck gets them.

  2. Get the takeoff

Decking, joists, beam, posts, footing concrete, hangers, fasteners, stairs and railing, counted before and after your waste factor and priced from your price book.

  3. Take it to the yard

Counts are in pieces, bags, packs and boxes. Check the list against what your yard stocks and charges, then order.

Questions

How close is the estimate?

It's a starting point, not a final order. The tool flags its quantity assumptions: post bases, joist hangers, nails, ledger fasteners and the deck screw or hidden clip schedule. Its advisory notes are for estimating, not engineering or code advice. Check local code and your yard before you order.

Pressure-treated or composite: which does it price?

Whichever you pick, at the price you enter. The price book starts with estimates from public US retail listings, and a line with no sourced price is left empty for you to fill in. Every price is editable, so the estimate runs on what you pay.

Is this a subscription, and how long does the license last?

No. Pro costs $39, paid once. Nothing renews or charges again, and there's nothing to cancel. Your key is valid for 1 year from the date of purchase. In that year you can have it active on up to 5 devices or browsers at a time. Each browser on each device counts as one, so Chrome and Safari on the same computer are two. To free a place, remove the key in the app, in the browser you no longer use. If that device is gone, write to hello@fieldgrade.app with your order number and we clear it for you. When the year ends, the key stops working and Pro turns off.

Do I need an account?

No. There's no account to create, free or Pro. Pro works from a license key, and the key comes to you by email.

How does the license key arrive?

By email, right after checkout, to the address you used to pay. If you can't find it, check your spam folder, then write to hello@fieldgrade.app.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. It runs in the web browser on a phone, tablet or computer. Nothing to install.

Metric or imperial?

Both. The default follows the region in your browser's language settings: imperial for the US and its territories, Canada, Liberia and Myanmar, metric for the UK and elsewhere. A visible unit toggle lets you switch, and there's no location lookup.

Can I use it for my customers' jobs?

Yes. The license covers your own personal or business work, including estimates and bids for your customers. One key is for one person, so don't share, resell or redistribute it or the tool.

Is this engineering or code advice?

No. It's an estimating aid, not engineering, code or permit advice, and it does not check that a deck is safe to build. Check local codes, permits and site conditions, and talk to your local building department or a licensed engineer before you build.

What do you collect about me?

Your checkout email and order details, to send and check your key. Saved projects and prices stay in your browser. No cookies from us and no ad trackers. We log anonymous page events on our own server. Clicking Buy opens Lemon Squeezy's checkout, which takes payment. The privacy page lists everything.

How does the 30-day refund work?

By email, no questions asked. Write to hello@fieldgrade.app within 30 days, from the address you used at checkout, and add your order number if it's handy. The money goes back to your original payment method through Lemon Squeezy, and the license key stops working.
